God As Servant

Genesis 1:1 1"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."1 Did you ever ponder the question of why God created? Was He lonely? Did He have an artistic bent that just needed an outlet? Or, is His character one of being a servant? Look at the verses below and see what you think.

Genesis 2:18-22 18The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." 19Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.2

Genesis 3:21 21The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.3

Genesis 15:1-5 1After this the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward." 2But Abram said, "O Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" 3And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir." 4Then the word of of the Lord came to him: "This man will not be your heir." 5He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." The he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."4

Mark 10:45 45For even the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.5

Throughout scripture, from Genesis through the New Testament we see God as a servant. For Adam he created Eve, when Adam and Eve sinned and felt shame at their nakedness God provided them with clothes, when Abram was childless God blessed him with descendents that were too numerous to count, and when God finally came to earth as a man he gave up his very life for us. God truly is a servant.
